DANVILLE, Ky. — March brings new opportunities to explore creativity, build skills and plan for summer at the Art Center of the Bluegrass.

A new exhibit, The Gathering Artists: What We See, inspired by the work of renowned glass artist Stephen Rolfe Powell, will be on display March 2 through April 11 in the Grand Exhibit Hall. An opening reception will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 6. Guests are invited to find inspiration from the exhibit and present it during Poetry Connected: The Gathering Artists, will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. March 20. These events are free and open to the public.

The Gathering Artists is a coalition of creatives from Danville and surrounding communities who meet monthly to share ideas and foster artistic support. The exhibit features paintings and two-dimensional works inspired by Powell’s vibrant use of color.

Tea blender, writer and historian Bruce Richardson will visit Tuesday, March 3, for Lunch with the Arts. The noon program will feature a discussion titled “Tea, Art and Architecture in Victorian Glasgow.” Richardson is the founder of Elmwood Inn Fine Teas and has presented at institutions including the Frist Museum, The Albuquerque Museum and The Museum of American Arts & Crafts. He also serves as Tea Master for the Boston Tea Party Ships Museum and is a contributing editor for TeaTime magazine.

In late February, the Art Center delivered a glass artwork from the Stephen Rolfe Powell Collection to the Frazier Kentucky History Museum for inclusion in its “120 Cool KY Counties” exhibit. The piece represents Boyle County and will remain on view for one year.

The public is invited to an Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, to learn more about the Art Center’s rental spaces, including the Murrini Café, Grand Hall and upcoming Ballroom.

Located at 401 and 409 West Main Street in Danville, Kentucky, Art Center of the Bluegrass connects all people to art, culture, and creativity. Bringing 30,000 people through the doors each year for the GLASS National Art Museum, art exhibits, classes, workshops, retail space, café, events, community gatherings, cultural conversations, and ceramics studio, the Art Center of the Bluegrass is reimagining what an art center can be. 

Over the past several weeks, Danville experienced an unusually long and challenging winter weather event, with repeated snowfall, freezing temperatures, and heavy ice. Throughout it all, City of Danville Public Works crews worked daily to keep roads passable and the community safe under difficult conditions.

One of the biggest challenges was severe ice compaction, layers of ice forming over snow. Crews made the careful decision to allow snowfall to buffer streets ahead of incoming ice. This strategy ultimately made plowing safer and more effective.

Roadway and Sidewalk Safety

As snow and ice melt, residents may notice potholes and other road deterioration, including blocked storm drains. Unfortunately, this type of damage is common after harsh winter weather events, heavy plow usage and repeated freeze–thaw cycles. While frustrating, it is largely unavoidable. The City of Danville works diligently to repair City streets as weather conditions allow.

Many sidewalks also remain hazardous and property owners are encouraged to clear sidewalks to their homes and businesses as soon as possible.

• Report potholes and roadway issues so crews can prioritize repairs
• Clear sidewalks and drains on your property

City of Danville Prepares for Approaching Winter Storm

The forecasted winter storm is expected to produce significant snowfall and freezing temperatures. The City of Danville is actively preparing to protect public safety and maintain essential services and encourages residents to take steps to prepare, as well. 

Public Works

The City of Danville Public Works Department has tuned up snowplows and treatment trucks, inspected equipment, and prepared salt supplies for immediate use. Crews are prepared to begin laying salt ahead of the storm and will continue road treatment operations throughout the event as conditions allow.

Residents are encouraged to:

• Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snowfall
• Give snowplows and salt trucks plenty of room to operate, including parking off the street when possible
• Use caution on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads, which freeze first

Danville Police Department

The Danville Police Department is prepared with additional staff to patrol City streets, monitor road conditions and provide assistance for motorists. The department reminds drivers that road conditions can deteriorate quickly during winter storms. Snow and ice greatly reduce traction and visibility, increasing the risk of accidents and stranded vehicles.

Roadway safety tips: 

• Stay off the roads if travel is not essential
• Slow down and increase following distance
• Avoid sudden braking and sharp turns
• Ensure headlights are on during low visibility
• Make sure tires are in good condition
• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle (blanket, flashlight, water, phone charger, etc.)

Reducing unnecessary travel also helps keep roads clearer for emergency responders and road crews.

City of Danville Fire Department

Cold temperatures during winter storms often lead to an increase in calls related to space heaters and alternative heating sources. The Danville Fire Department urges residents to use extra caution.

Fire safety reminders: 

• Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable
• Never leave heaters unattended
• Use only heaters with automatic shutoff features
• Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working on every level of your home
• Always operate alternate heat sources according to manufacturer instructions.
• Ensure proper ventilation for any fuel-burning heaters.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless but can be deadly. If your alarm sounds or you experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or nausea, go outside immediately and call 911.

Utilities

The City of Danville Utility Department is preparing for extreme cold that can affect both household plumbing and city water infrastructure. During significant winter weather events, it is common for the ground to freeze and thaw as temperatures fluctuate, causing the soil to shift which can increase the likelihood of water main breaks throughout the community. The City of Danville regularly monitors water usage and pressure throughout the system but asks residents to report any discoloration or loss of water pressure to 859-238-1241.  It's also a good idea to sign up for Boil Water Advisory notifications with the City of Danville. As for protecting your home, the City of Danville Utilities Department recommends taking steps to protect your pipes below:

• Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls
• Allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses

The Danville 911 Dispatch Center is available 24/7 throughout the storm and will increase on-duty personnel to handle increased call volume.

The City of Danville encourages all residents to take this approaching storm seriously, prepare now, and check on neighbors who may need assistance. By working together, we can help keep our community safer during severe winter weather.

The Warming Center, which is traditionally activated by the Boyle County Emergency Management Agency, is ready and on stand-by for the forecasted winter storm to provide temporary shelter for those in need. The Warming Center will be activated based on need. Those seeking shelter should call 859-238-1220, the non-emergency dispatch line. As conditions change, the operation of the Warming Center may, as well. The unpredictability of the pending storm will keep emergency management staff on alert. Celebrate the Holidays in Danville: Tree Lighting and Danville Small Town Christmas

The holiday season is just around the corner and Downtown Danville is ready to kick off the festivities with two family-friendly events you won’t want to miss!

Downtown Danville Tree Lighting – Friday, November 28After finishing your Black Friday shopping, head to Weisiger Park for an evening full of holiday cheer. The fun begins at 5:00 p.m. with storytime from Plaid Elephant Books, followed by crafts, cookies, and hot chocolate with the Art Center of the Bluegrass. At 6:15 p.m., enjoy a performance by the Danville Children’s Choir before the tree lighting at 6:30 p.m..

While you’re enjoying the festivities, The Salvation Army of Danville will be hosting a toy drive. Bring new, unwrapped toys between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to help make the season brighter for children in our community.

The celebration doesn’t stop there! After the tree lighting, head over to West T. Hill Community Theatre for a screening of the holiday favorite “Love Actually.”

Danville’s Small Town Christmas – Saturday, December 6The beloved Danville Small Town Christmas festival is back! The festivities kick off at noon at Weisiger Park and along Main Street, with activities running through 5:00 p.m., culminating in the parade at 6:30 p.m.

Background: The festival was founded by Lahannah Bonagofski, who saw a need for a free, family-friendly holiday event in the community. Today, the organization is welcoming volunteers, sponsors, and participants for the parade, vendors, and community organizations. Applications are now open, and you can find all the details here.

The City of Danville is honored to recognize and celebrate the service of our veterans and active-duty service members through the 'Banners of the Brave' program. We are asking community members to submit applications for local veterans and active-duty service members to be displayed on light post banners in Downtown Danville. Banners will be proudly displayed from May through November for two years. Applications will remain open until all banners have been reserved.

Centre College has once again been recognized among the nation’s leading liberal arts and sciences institutions, earning strong placements in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges guide.

“While rankings will never fully define who we are,” said President Milton C. Moreland, “they affirm what makes our campus community special.”

A highlight this year is Centre’s impressive leap in the Undergraduate Teaching category — climbing over 20 places to reach #21 in the country.

U.S. News ranked Centre College #21 for Undergraduate Teaching and #25 for Study Abroad.

U.S. News also ranked Centre #20 in Best Value among National Liberal Arts Colleges. Access and affordability have long been central to the College’s mission, and in 2024, the College introduced the Centre Promise — a pledge to meet the full calculated financial need of all incoming first-year students.

The College earned the #25 ranking in Study Abroad, with nearly 85 percent of Centre students participating in global education opportunities. Registration Open for 47th Annual Constitution 5K Run for the Arts

Registration is now open for the 47th Annual Constitution 5K Run for the Arts, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 14, in downtown Danville.

Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels are invited to participate. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. at Weisiger Park, and the race starts at 5 p.m. at Constitution Square. Proceeds from the event benefit Art Center of the Bluegrass, supporting its mission to connect all people to art, creativity and culture.

Registration fees and sponsorships directly support the Center’s educational programs, exhibitions and outreach initiatives that serve artists and art enthusiasts of all ages.

“Run for the Arts is a great way to come together as a community, get active and support the arts,” said executive director Laura Elwyn. “Every step you take helps bring more creativity to our region.”

Centre College's efforts to make a premier education accessible for students from all walks of life have again earned national attention.

Forbes ranked Centre among the most generous private colleges in the country, a list of 25 schools that offer stand-out scholarship packages to first-time, full-time undergraduates.

The rankings look at the percentage of enrolled students who receive at least some grant aid and how that aid affected the total cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board.

“This recognition is a tribute to the generosity of our donors, many of whom are alumni who give back to the College because they know first-hand how a Centre degree unlocks a world of possibilities,” said Centre president Milton C. Moreland. “Their gifts allow us to welcome bright, ambitious students from all around the world and offer them transformative experiences they will carry with them for a lifetime.”

Forbes also ranked Centre among the best 500 colleges in the nation for undergraduate outcomes, a ranking that identifies schools offering the best educational, financial and career outcomes for all students.

Centre is one of only 10 schools ranked among the most generous to also fall within the top 250 colleges for undergraduate outcomes, a reflection of the tremendous value a Centre education offers.

Earlier this month, Centre was ranked among the best colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review, which surveyed over 170,000 students about their college experience. Centre students shared high remarks for both academic and social opportunities, as the College ranked 19th in the nation for both Greek life and having the most interesting and engaging faculty.
