Honoring Service and Community: VFW Post 3634 Hosts Annual City/County Luncheon

VFW Post 3634 once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the Danville–Boyle County community by hosting the annual City/County Luncheon, a tradition that brings together local government employees for an afternoon of fellowship, recognition, and gratitude. The event serves as a powerful reminder of how our local veterans continue to invest in the community, long after their military service has concluded.

This year’s luncheon highlighted the outstanding contributions of three public servants whose dedication helps keep Danville safe and supported each day. Fire Chief Mike McCurdy, Police Chief Tony Gray, and 911 Dispatcher Krystal Blackburn were honored with Public Servant Awards, recognizing their leadership, professionalism, and selfless service to Danville. As public servants often do, Krystal Blackburn, was unable to make the photo because she was managing calls and serving the community in the 911 dispatch center.

In addition to honoring local public safety leaders, the ceremony celebrated the achievements of two exceptional students. Nikki Woodrum, a student at Lincoln County High School, was recognized as the winner of the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest and Arianna Cruver, a student at Bate Middle School, earned the top award in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. Their thoughtful  perspectives reflect the promise of the next generation and the importance of civic engagement among young people.

Events like this luncheon highlight the unique role VFW Post 3634 plays in shaping community connection. The Post continues to be an outstanding partner to the City of Danville and Boyle County, offering support, leadership, and a model of service that uplifts us all. At a time when communities rely more than ever on collaboration and mutual respect, the veterans of Post 3634 continue to lead by example.

We are honored to work alongside these men and women and are deeply grateful for the countless ways they continue giving back to a community that owes them so much.
