The City of Danville manages two historic, City-owned cemeteries, Bellevue and Hilldale.

Updated Cemetery Rules and Regulations

On November 19, 2025, the City of Danville published the updated rules and regulations for the City of Danville's Cemeteries which will take effect on January 1, 2026.

Owning a Gravesite

  1. Placement of two bodies or cremated remains in the same casket or receptacle is permitted with certain permissions
  2. All monuments must be installed by an approved monument company only
  3. Electronic Devices incorporated into a headstone or footstone are prohibited
  4. Location, design, size, color, composition and installation of all stones much by approved by the City
  5. All burial plots shall be identified with a permanent monument within two years of the interment
  6. Funeral processions arriving after 3:00 PM will incur an after-hours fee

Tending a Gravesite

  1. Planting of trees, shrubs, and perennials on individual lots is prohibited
  2. An exemption permit form will need to be completed for all existing plantings
  3. Flowerbeds are not permitted unless an exemption permit form is completed and meet the following criteria:
    • Beds must be no wider than the headstone and be no more than 16” from the front of the bed to the front of the headstone
    • Edging must be made of concrete, masonry material, or composite rubber
  4. Cut flowers from live plants may be placed at any time and will be removed after flowers have wilted
  5. Potted plants and artificial flowers are permitted as long as the container remains atop the confines of the marker on the grave.
  6. Artificial flowers that become faded or detached may be removed by the City
  7. Statues and benches are prohibited unless an exemption permit form is completed
  8. Shepherd hooks and solar lights are prohibited unless included in an approved flowerbed
  9. Artificial arrangements may be placed on the grass 10 days prior to and remain until 10 days after Easter, Memorial Day, and Christmas
  10. The use of American flags is allowed any time during the year
  11. The use of photographs and picture frames as grave space or monument decorations is prohibited
  12. The use of sound and/or light transmitted devices as grave space decorations is prohibited.

Visiting the Cemeteries

  1. Cemetery grounds are considered sacred, and visitors should display accepted decorum at all times within the cemetery
  2. Firearms are prohibited in the cemetery.
  3. It is unlawful to desecrate or injure the cemetery, including lots, grave spaces, gravestones, markers, monuments, fences, landscape and wildlife within the cemetery
  4. Trash receptacles are distributed evenly throughout the cemeteries. Disposal of waste in any other location is prohibited
  5. Hours of public operation shall be from 8:00 AM local time to 8:00 PM during Daylight Savings Time and to 6:00 PM during Standard Time of each day
  6. Visitors to the cemetery shall limit their recreational activities to walking, jogging or non-motorized bicycle riding
  7. Skateboarding, skating or rollerblading will not be allowed in the Cemetery
  8. Sunbathing is not allowed
  9. Visitors are not permitted to climb on any monuments
  10. Speed limit for motorized vehicles shall be a maximum of 10 miles per hour
  11. Picnics are not permitted on the grounds of the cemetery and alcoholic beverages may not be brought onto the Cemetery property
  12. Pets are not allowed in the Cemetery
