About the Danville Fire Department
Established in 1876, the Danville Fire Department is one of the oldest paid fire departments in Kentucky. Today, the department operates two fully staffed fire stations, with firefighters on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The department follows a three-platoon system, where each platoon works a 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off. Each platoon is led by a Battalion Chief, whose quarters are located on Main Street. Supporting the Battalion Chief are two Fire Lieutenants who manage daily operations and oversee the fire companies. On average, nine personnel are on duty each day to respond to emergencies and carry out additional responsibilities.
We are proud of the dedicated men and women who serve our community with professionalism, pride, and a commitment to excellence. They train rigorously and continuously push for innovation in the services we provide. Thanks to strong support from our City government, the department has made significant advancements over the past decade and we’re excited for what lies ahead.
Our website is designed to be informative and easy to navigate. We update it regularly with the latest news and happenings from the department. We also invite you to visit either of our fire stations for a tour—we’d love to show you around.
Prevention First
The most important role of any fire department is prevention. Through community education and regular inspections, we work to reduce the risk of injury, loss of life, property damage, and environmental harm. Our mission is simple: save lives, protect property, and preserve the environment.

During flushing the hydrants are tested as well. Periodic testing of fire hydrants is required to maintain the fire departments protection rating and is necessary to ensure that the hydrants have adequate flow and pressure for firefighting.
Following Flushing Residents are encouraged to check for possible water discoloration prior to use. If water is discolored, it can usually be remedied by running a cold water tap for 4-5 minutes or until the water clears. Postponing laundry until water is clear (usually no more than one day) is recommended.
Why are hydrants flushed?
Periodically, you will see City of Danville personnel releasing water from hydrants. Hydrant flushing is necessary to test the hydrants to make sure adequate flow and pressure is available. Flushing is also done to remove sediment from the pipes to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution pipes.
Is my water safe to drink after flushing?
Yes, your water is safe to drink. Occasionally, water becomes discolored after hydrant flushing. If this happens, run your cold water tap for a few minutes until the water clears. If it doesn't clear the first time, wait a few minutes, and run the water again. You should avoid washing clothes until the water clears.
Annual Hydrant Flushing typically begins in the Spring and annoucements are made daily on the City's Facebook page regarding the location of flushing. If you have questions, please call 859-238-1211.
On-demand blood pressure checks are available at both fire stations. Stop by anytime!
